Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal data Esse Mobility collects when you use the GreenWheels rider app, the GreenWheels Driver app and this website, why we use it, who we share it with and the choices you have. We process personal data in line with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.

Last updated 7 October 2026

1. Who we are

Esse Mobility (“we”, “us”) runs the GreenWheels ride-hailing service: the GreenWheels app for riders, the GreenWheels Driver app for drivers and this website. We decide how and why your personal data is used, which makes us its data controller.

Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to support@essemobility.ng.

2. The information we collect

If you ride with us

  • Your name, email address, phone number and password (we store only a secure hash of your password).
  • Profile details you choose to add, such as a photo, date of birth, gender, home address, saved places (for example Home and Work) and identity details such as your NIN.
  • Trip details: pickup and drop-off points, routes, times, fares, ratings and feedback you give.
  • Messages you send in in-app chat and the details of in-app calls (see section 3).

If you drive with us

  • Your identity and contact details, date of birth, gender and photo.
  • Your NIN and the result of identity checks, your driver’s licence (number, dates, state of issue and photos) and other documents we ask for.
  • Vehicle details, vehicle photos and vehicle documents, and the fleet vehicle assigned to you if you drive one of ours.
  • The bank account you add for payouts, plus guarantor and emergency contact details.
  • Health details you choose to share, such as blood group, genotype, a disability or a medical condition. We use these only to help you in an emergency, and you can leave them out.
  • Your earnings, trips, ratings and online hours.

Location

  • Riders: your location while you book and during a trip, so we can set your pickup point and show you your driver.
  • Drivers: your location while you are online and during trips, including when the app is in the background, so we can send you nearby ride requests and riders can follow the car.
  • Battery SOS (fleet drivers): your location while a battery request is open, so our team can reach you.

School runs

When a parent or guardian books a school run, they give us their child’s name, age, class, school, pickup address and times, and the contact details of guardians and teachers who should be kept informed. At drop-off the driver takes a photo, with its GPS position, which we send to the parent and the teacher contact.

Payments

  • Card, bank transfer and USSD payments are processed by Paystack. We never receive or store your full card number or PIN.
  • If you choose to save a card for one-tap top-ups, we keep the reusable token Paystack gives us together with the card brand, last four digits, expiry date and issuing bank.
  • Your wallet balance and transactions, and the bank account details you add for withdrawals.

From your device

  • Device type, operating system and app version, and a push notification token so we can send you trip and account updates.
  • Crash and error reports that help us fix problems.
  • Which in-app promotions you see or tap, so we can limit how often you see the same one.
  • IP addresses and similar technical data in our server logs.

3. In-app calls and chats

Riders and drivers can call and message each other inside the app without sharing their phone numbers. We do not record the audio of in-app calls. We keep call details (who called, when, how long the call lasted and connection quality) and chat messages for a limited time so we can investigate safety reports and disputes (see section 9).

4. How we use your information

  • To create and manage your account and verify drivers and their vehicles.
  • To match riders with drivers, show routes, arrival times and fares, and complete trips and school runs.
  • To take payments, run your wallet, save cards you ask us to save, and pay drivers.
  • To keep people safe: driver checks, live trip tracking, safety cameras, drop-off photos, Battery SOS and responding to reports.
  • To provide support, resolve disputes and handle refunds and chargebacks.
  • To send service messages, such as trip updates, receipts and security alerts, and, if you have not opted out, news and offers.
  • To show in-app promotions from GreenWheels and partners and measure how often they are seen.
  • To prevent fraud and misuse, secure our systems and improve our services.
  • To meet our legal, tax and regulatory obligations.

6. Who we share it with

  • Riders and drivers: during a trip, a rider sees the driver’s first name, photo, rating, car and plate number and live location; a driver sees the rider’s name, rating and pickup and drop-off points.
  • School contacts: drop-off updates and photos go to the guardians and teachers added to a school run.
  • Service providers who work on our behalf: Paystack (payments), Google Maps Platform (maps, addresses and routes), OneSignal (push notifications), Sentry (crash reporting), Cloudinary and Amazon Web Services (secure file and photo storage), Render (hosting) and our email provider.
  • Authorities, insurers or other parties when the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety, or to establish or defend legal claims.
  • A buyer or successor if our business is reorganised or sold, under the same protections.

We do not sell your personal data.

7. Safety cameras and drop-off photos

Some GreenWheels fleet vehicles have safety cameras that take photos during trips. These photos are encrypted and are deleted automatically after 30 days, unless they are needed for an open dispute or safety report, in which case we keep them until it is resolved. Only authorised staff handling a dispute or safety report can view them.

School-run drop-off photos are shared only with the child’s guardians and the teacher contacts on that school run, and are deleted automatically when they expire.

8. International transfers

Some of our service providers store or process data outside Nigeria. When that happens we rely on the safeguards the NDPA allows, such as contractual protections, and we share only what each provider needs to do its job.

9. How long we keep it

InformationHow long
Detailed GPS points from trips30 days, then only the trip summary is kept
Safety-camera and drop-off photos30 days, longer only while a dispute or safety report is open
In-app call details (no audio is recorded)90 days
In-app chat messages180 days
Account and profile detailsWhile your account is open; erased when you delete your account (see section 11)
Payment, wallet and payout recordsAs long as tax and financial laws require us to keep them

We may keep limited data longer where the law requires it or to resolve a dispute or claim.

10. How we protect it

Data travels over encrypted connections, passwords are stored as secure hashes, safety-camera photos are encrypted at rest, saved cards are kept as Paystack tokens rather than card numbers, and staff access is limited and logged. No system is perfectly secure, so if a breach affects your data we will tell you and the regulator as the law requires.

11. Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app: open your profile, choose Delete account and confirm with the code we email you. You then have 7 days to change your mind, after which your account and personal data are erased.

We keep only what we must by law, such as payment and tax records. Please withdraw any money left in your wallet before you delete your account. If you can’t use the app, email support@essemobility.ng from the address on your account and we will help.

Step-by-step instructions, and how to delete only some of your data, are on our Delete your account page.

12. Your rights

Under the NDPA you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it.
  • Correct data that is wrong or incomplete.
  • Ask us to delete your data or restrict how we use it.
  • Object to processing based on our legitimate interests, and to direct marketing at any time.
  • Receive your data in a portable format.
  • Withdraw consent you have given, without affecting earlier processing.

To use any of these rights, email support@essemobility.ng. We may ask you to confirm your identity first and will reply within the time the law allows. You can also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.

13. Children

Accounts are for people aged 18 or over. Children do not use our apps: for school runs, a parent or guardian books the trip and gives us the child’s details, and confirms they are allowed to do so. We use a child’s information only to run that school run and keep the child safe.

14. Cookies

This website uses only the cookies and similar storage it needs to load and work properly. It does not use advertising or analytics cookies. Our apps don’t use cookies, but they store a small amount of data on your device, such as your sign-in session and preferences, so they work as you expect.

15. Changes to this policy

We will update this policy when our services or the law change. If the changes are significant we will tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.

16. Contact us

For questions, requests or complaints about your personal data, email support@essemobility.ng.
